It’s clear that projects can have very different Desired Outcomes and deliver different benefits. It is really important to define what the Desired Outcomes are before a project is started!

    Some examples include:

► Reduction in falls and hospital stays,
► Improved mood of the older people:
► Reduced amount of caregiver’s time needed:
► Cost efficiency compared with hospital stay
    ► Return on Investment

If anyone is looking for the Home Automation and Telecare programme reference site it is in the report
    http://ec.europa.eu/digital-agenda/en/news/study-business-and-financing-models-related-ict-ageing-well

The Project is called ESOPPE – it’s Case study 5 in the report.

    Yes definitely!

A lot of work has been done through the EU Active and Healthy Ageing programme which has identified several “reference sites” recognised as having best practice in the use of technology for Falls Prevention and Monitoring. You can find details in these two reports
    http://ec.europa.eu/digital-agenda/en/news/excellent-innovation-ageing-european-guide-reference-sites-european-innovation-partnership
    http://ec.europa.eu/digital-agenda/en/news/study-business-and-financing-models-related-ict-ageing-well

These are the reference sites that specifically rrelate to technology for Falls:
    • T4H (Technology and Human Help at Home after Hospitalisation) Contact: Prof. Francois Piette [email protected]

It is also relevant here that the ENOFALLS project is building a repository of ICT solutions for prevention and monitoring of Falls http://www.e-nofalls.eu/ictrepository/. This mainly contains solutions that are already on the market – categorised by whether they are for prevention or detection and within that, categorised as Home systems, smartphone apps and wearable systems. So it should be possible to search for Home systems for falls detection and see what is available.

How do older people know how much exercise is enough to maintain the benefits? Is there a way to use technology to inform them?

Can physiotherapists play a role in encouraging their patients to continue to exercise after rehabilitation?

If the local social care provider is paying, how do you make the business case for investing in preventive activities? How do you demonstrate how many falls a particular technology will prevent? How do you quantify the cost saving?

An important question for implementation is “Who will pay for the technology?” Some older people in their own homes may be able to afford to purchase their own WiiFit/Knect box but others will be dependent on their local social care providers.

Another outcome should be improved quality of life for older people – exercise can lead to more positive mental attitudes.

The eventual outcome of increasing adherence to falls exercise ought to be fewer falls in older adults leading to cost savings from fewer emergency admissions.

Exergaming (e.g. exercise programmes on WiiFit or Knect platforms) are excellent for older people to use in their own homes or in care homes.
